The market of polymeric formulations for the precise intravitreal delivery of drug products is growing rapidly and represents one of the most exciting, yet challenging, pharmaceutical development areas today.

Worldwide, around 2.2 billion people suffer from ophthalmic conditions, not least due to the extensive use of smartphones and computer screens. As a result, new technologies for sustained drug delivery and beneficial long-acting injectables are in pharmaceutical focus.

In this joint webinar, Evonik’s specialist Troy Carter and Andrei Winkler of Thermo Fisher will explain how to develop formulations with an ideal match of polymer degradation and drug release, while minimizing the number injections to the sensitive eye area.

In addition, the webinar will review new polymeric biomaterials such as specialized excipients for low immunogenicity as well as extrusion-based process technologies and equipment, analytical methods and process controls that can support fast commercialization.

Mr. Carter is a Senior Manager for Innovation Management at Evonik Health Care, and has more than 20 years of R&D and development expertise with pharmaceutical and medical technologies. In his current role, he is responsible for coordinating a series of drug delivery innovation projects to address areas of emerging customer need. Prior to joining Evonik, he was a Principal Scientist at Medtronic within their spinal and biologics division. In addition to having a strong mechanical background, Troy has extensive process, analytical, and formulation chemistry relating to the controlled release of parenteral drug products in dosage forms such as implants, microspheres and gels.
